Lyrasis Organizational Home

Organizational Home

Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships

The Organizational Home is a strategic program of Lyrasis that is managed by Community Supported Technologies and Hosting Services (CSTHS) at Lyrasis. This program works with the core service teams within Lyrasis to  provide many resources and services to help grow, support and amplify community contributions.

The overall mission of CSTHS is to build, sustain and deliver trusted open technologies and expert hosting for collections professionals worldwide, enabling them to strengthen, sustain and preserve their vital resources alongside a nonprofit partner committed to reinvestment, stewardship and service to our communities.

Community-supported open-source technology programs (CST Programs), led by their governance structures, sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Lyrasis to ensure the terms of the relationship, expectations and lanes of responsibility are clear.

Among other services, the Organizational Home, Lyrasis provides a legal and fiscal structure which CST Programs can use to employ staff, hire and pay contractors, register trademarks, invoice members, receive donations, disburse funds, etc.

While there may be overlap between the technologies CSTHS offers hosting services for and the CST programs who make their home at Lyrasis, Lyrasis' Hosting Services are completely separate from the Organizational Home. Lyrasis may be just one of several Service Providers who offer hosting for a CST program, and the ability for a technology to be hosted is not a requirement for participation in the Organizational Home.

The Organizational Home, the CST Program itself and Hosting Service Providers are all part of an interconnected village working to sustain a CST program. The following diagram outlines where the different responsibilities lie when a CST program has its home at Lyrasis:

Costs Paid by CST Program

  • 100% of all direct expenses of the program (including salaries, fringe, computer and communication expenses, contracted development work, etc.)
  • Standard IDC rate as a percentage of all direct program expenses to cover Organizational Home costs except where otherwise indicated or negotiated
  • Percentage of CST Director’s salary for strategic and staff oversight
