Launched in January 2021, as a consortium for any non-profit in the US looking to get started with DataCite DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers), the Lyrasis DataCite US Community is dedicated to supporting open research infrastructure and best practices for making research and scholarly materials more FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

Fee Structure Update

In April 2026, DataCite announced key updates to their fee structure, designed to make access to DataCite services more equitable across our global community (read more). DataCite’s new fee structure is based on an organization's geographic location and annual revenue, rather than the number of DOIs that an organization creates each year (the basis of the previous model). For organizations participating in the Lyrasis DataCite US Community, a flat fee will be applied so that each organization’s annual fee is the same, regardless of the number of DOIs registered by each organization. For the 2026 calendar year, this fee is $1,826 per organization. Pricing for the 2027 calendar year will be set in January 2027. Metadata Dashboard

DataCite has launched a new metadata dashboard to provide insights into the current state of DataCite DOI (Findable) metadata quality and completeness and help organizations identify opportunities to improve their metadata to bolster the discoverability and impact of their scholarly resources. Through a public dashboard at https://metadata.datacite.org/, users can “search for any DataCite Member, Consortium Organization, or Repository to view a metadata quality snapshot and explore opportunities for improvement” (read more). Metadata associated with Related Identifiers is an area of improvement for Lyrasis DataCite US Community organizations, as illustrated by the Findable metadata within Lyrasis DataCite organizations’ DOIs. See more details at https://metadata.datacite.org/lyrasis.

2025 Member Survey Results

In the fall of 2025, a brief survey was sent out to all participating organizations to gather feedback on the types of resources and topics of interest for priority focus in 2026. We received responses representing 6 of the 26 participating organizations at that time. Responses from that survey have been used to plan our 2026 community activities (see below). We will continue to survey participating organizations at the end of each calendar year to prepare for the following year - stay tuned for the 2026 survey later this year!
